Teeth Whitening: Q And A

If you are interested in whiter teeth, you may have questions regarding when to whiten, how often to whiten, if it is safe to whiten, and more. Because everyone admires a white smile, and many people would love to have whiter teeth, today's note is aimed at answering questions regarding teeth whitening.

Questions and Answers:

Question: Why aren't my teeth naturally white?

Answer: Teeth are actually a pearly shade of white that gradually yellows with age, no matter how good your oral hygiene is. They are not naturally white. Only baby teeth look pure white, but permanent teeth are not. As we age, the enamel on our teeth thins out exposing the layer beneath (the dentin) which is yellow-ish in color. Stains from food, beverages, tartar, smoking, and more can also yellow your teeth.

Question: Will whitening hurt my teeth?

Answer: Whitening according to directions will not damage your teeth. It is safe and effective. Most treatments consist of the same bleaching agents whether you whiten at home or at the dentist. However, over whitening by whitening too often, or using too many whitening products such as whitening strips, whitening toothpaste, whitening gum, etc., can eventually weaken your tooth enamel.

Question: Is it better if you do it yourself, or should I see my dentist for a whitening treatment?

Answer: In-office whitening systems tend to be a bit stronger and last longer. Also, your dentist will incorporate measures to protect your gums and other oral tissues during the whitening process. While DIY whitening kits are effective, they can often leave a bit to be desired. Dr. Hutto offers the advanced Opalescence® system which can brighten even stubborn surface stains and whiten your teeth several shades.
