The Dental Crown Explained

We use many dental terms in our blogs and if you don't know what we are referring to, well, that's not very helpful to you! We mention dental crowns a lot, so today we are going to explain exactly what a dental crown is. Your tooth is made up of a root and a crown (there's more to it than that but for now this will suffice). The root is what holds your tooth in your jawbone, and the crown is the part of the tooth that we see above your gum line. It is the part of your tooth that you brush, chew with, and that makes up your smile.

Crowns

When we discuss implants, bridges, whitening, chips, fillings, etc., in most cases we are referring to the crown of your tooth. The crown is what usually gets cavities that require fillings. The crown is what you brush and floss. The crowns are what are whitened. The crown is what can get chipped or broken, and if you require a dental implant, bridge, or dentures, it is the crown of your tooth that we are replacing.

How Are Prosthetic Crowns Created?

First, your dentist will take dental impressions of your mouth in the office to get the right shape and size of the crown. Next, the impressions and other required information is sent to a dental lab where the technicians use it to mill Zirconia crowns using via computer. The size and fit is much more accurate when crowns are fabricated using computer software and hardware.
