The Magnolia Mound Plantation House

Originally constructed in 1791, the Magnolia Mound Plantation House is a French Creole house and an example of the vernacular architectural influences of early settlers from France and the West Indies. The plantation house began as a four-room cottage, one of the earliest buildings in the present-day city of Baton Rouge. Throughout history several rooms were added on, and the land was run as a successful plantation. At its prime, it housed a large family and over 50 slaves who worked the 950-acre property under an overseer cultivating tobacco, cotton, indigo, and sugarcane.

Not only a respected landmark but a vital part of the community, the Plantation House offers educational programs, workshops, lectures, festivals and other special events. The grounds feature:

  • The Historic House Museum
  • An Open Hearth Kitchen
  • Slave Quarters
  • The Pigeonnier
  • The Overseer's House
  • A Privy
