Implant Questions and Answers Round #2

Q: What does the actual implant procedure entail?

A: The dental implant procedure is a surgical procedure that involves 'implanting' a small titanium post into your jawbone. The post acts as a prosthetic tooth root by osseointegrating (permanently fusing) with the bone, creating a strong, stable, root-like structure. Once this step is completed, healing will take about 3 to 4 months, after which time we will complete the implant procedure by topping the post with an abutment and then bonding a dental crown to the abutment.

Q: Does the surgery take place in the hospital?

A: No. Dental implant surgery is commonly performed as an outpatient procedure in your own dentists operatory or, sometimes, in a specialist's office. There is no overnight stayed required.

Q: Is implant placement safe?

A: Although safe for adults, dental implant surgery is not recommended for children. Adults with certain medical conditions, including but not limited to high blood pressure and diabetes, should check with their general practitioner before deciding on the procedure.

Q: How successful is implant placement?

A: Designed to last a lifetime, dental implant treatment has been proven to be a highly predictable and successful dental treatment with success rates of over 95 percent.
