Is Vaping Bad for My Mouth?

The common thought is that vaping, e-cigs or juules are safer than smoking cigarettes. Many smokers are using these devices as a safer alternative to regular cigarettes. But are they?

Different isn't always better

There is still a lot of research that needs to be done into the safety and adverse effects of vaping over smoking. Early studies show that the effects of vaping may be just as bad and at times worse than smoking. Some of the flavorings used in the vape juice or liquid have been shown to be just as bad for your teeth as high sugar candies and soft drinks. Cavities caused from the combination of dry mouth from vaping and decay inducing flavorings can be a recipe for disaster for the regular vaper. Daily flossing along with brushing twice a day is recommended to help prevent cavities. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are important to identify and treat cavities early before they turn into major problems.

Side effects of vaping

Gum inflammation is another big problem seen with vaping. Low grade, chronic inflammation develops causing gingivitis and eventually periodontal disease. Bleeding gums, bad breath and mouth ulcers can be caused from any of the popular methods of vaping. Left untreated, gum disease can result in gum abscesses, bleeding, pain and eventual tooth loss. More research is needed into the long-term effects of vaping and oral health. Early studies indicate it is no less harmful than smoking.
