Expecting a child is an exciting time for any family. During pregnancy, the developing child takes a toll on mom’s body, including her teeth and gums. Proper dental care is of paramount importance during pregnancy.
Contrary to popular belief, teeth do not loose calcium and become soft during pregnancy. Mom’s diet provides the needed calcium for the developing baby. The baby’s teeth begin to develop between months three and six of pregnancy. This is why it is very important to eat a diet rich in calcium at least three times per day.
It’s vital to take in enough nutrients - especially phosphorous, calcium, protein and vitamins A, C and D. In addition to diet, your obstetrician will place you on prenatal vitamins to augment your diet and ensure you and your developing baby receive the required nutrients for a healthy pregnancy.
In addition to proper diet, maintaining a healthy mouth is important to prevent cavities and gum disease during pregnancy. Hormonal changes can cause the gums to become sensitive and bleed easily. Because it so common during pregnancy, it is often know as pregnancy gingivitis. Even though the gums may bleed, it is very important to continue to floss and brush daily to reduce bacteria build up and prevent cavities and gum disease.
Your dentist may recommend more frequent cleaning visits during your pregnancy. With time, things will begin to return to normal after the baby is born.
